The next GST Council Meeting in September 2026 has brought a breath of fresh air in to the minds of the businesses traders startups, mobile sellers, online sellers all across India. The importance of the meeting is that may some key GST policy decisions are being proposed to ease the compliance as well as the registration process. The Times of India

The most significant proposal is to speed up GST registration for new businesses. The government is finding methods to cut down the paperwork and improve the digital verification process for genuine business to get GST registration at an earlier stage.

Another potential subject of discussion would be automated cancellation of “inactive” GST registrations. For instance, a business who does not lodge any returns over an extended period may be subject to automatic cancellation.

Some form of streamlined approach to re-activate the business may also be adopted. These online sellers on marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart etc. closely monitor the changes from FDI norms as GST will impact their listings, invoices & tax filing directly. Small businesses feel the eased norms to improve ease of doing business.

The GST Council might also take a look on return filing procedures. In particular, officials are thinking of simplifying the procedure to prevent duplicated information and making filing returns more convenient for small taxpayers.

Strengthening technology-based verification and fraud detection are also likely. The companies should save the correct invoices, GST record and repeatedly file the return, it was the way to prevent the penalty.

The specialists suggested the companies should check the official announcement of GST after the meeting directly, instead of believing the rumors on the Facebook. If implemented, the rule change could prove to be advantageous to the startup/ MSME/ seller in e-commerce as the changes would lead to a simplified and clear tax structure alleviating the undue burden of compliances.

The decision on implementation will be announced after the conclusion of the GST Council meeting.
