National Sports Day 2026 Why India Celebrates Major Dhyan Chand

India celebrates National Sports Day on the last day of August (29th August) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players of all time. This day is dedicated to India’s sporting heritage and promotes sports activities among people of each age category.

Dhyan Chand is widely recognized as one of the best hockey professionals in the world, earning him the nickname the ‘Wizard of Hockey’. He was instrumental in India’s victory at three Olympics, winning them golden medals. He further became a legend when his amazing talent and devotion to sport attracted worldwide attention and admiration.

Sports Day is joyfully celebrated by children and teens at schools, colleges and universities as well as at various sport institutions and organizations. They run competitions fitness marathon and awareness campaigns. The aim of all these activities is to create role models for teenagers to keep themselves in shape and lead healthy lives.
